Draft of Article

Singer-songwriter, Alex Johnson, is a new uprising star that has caught the nation’s attention with his soulful, deep and meaningful songs that he has written himself. At the age of fourteen Alex started to cover songs that are currently in the charts at gigs and friend’s parties until he got spotted by a record company after posting one of his live gigs on YouTube.
“I was completely in shock when I got the phone call, at first I wondered if it was one of my mates messing around, but when they said that they would like to set up a gig for me so they could see me sing and the audience’s response I knew that I actually had a chance of making my dream become reality” says the 19 year old. Luckily I got the chance to ask Alex all the questions that I know readers will want to hear the answers to, so I met up with him for a chat about his dream so far.

Q. How does it feel to know that you have achieved something in five years that people could never dream of achieving in a lifetime?
A. Well I never thought I could achieve this before it happened to me, I suppose you just don’t know what’s round the corner! It feels absolutely amazing to be where I am now and to look back at how much my life has changed and I am so grateful for it.

Q. What everyone wants to know is who are all your songs written about?
A. Not all of them are about someone in particular sometimes I write about other people’s relationships that I see or just people I know but most of them are about ex-girlfriends!

Q. Where do you start when you are writing your songs?
A. I usually make a tune first on my guitar and the lyrics usually come after that, sometimes the next day or sometimes a few weeks later. I have to experience something to write about it, it’s not like making up a story, the lyrics are all personal to me in some way.

Q. Which, out of all the gigs you have done, was your favorite?
A. Definitely the one in my home town after I had been away to London making my album for a year, it was so good to be home and to see the support that I had from the people I know and love. It was awesome.

Q. And what was your family and friend’s reaction like when you told them that you had been signed to Kerbstone Records?
A. Everyone was absolutely ecstatic, I only told my dad about the progress and he went through everything with me to make sure it was all sorted out but I didn’t tell anyone else till I had put pen to paper, when I got home there were lot’s of champagne corks popping everywhere!

Q. Now we all read this celebrity gossip magazines and you have made a few headlines after being spotted with Pixie Lott…tell us more?
A. There isn’t much to tell apart from the fact that we get on great because we are a similar age and we have been through a similar experience and we can relate to each other. We have great nights out and she is such a character but we are just friends.

Q. Okay, so if Pixie isn’t on the scene in the relationship way then is anyone else?
A. No, definitely not. I have too much on at the moment to be trying to manage a relationship as well, I think I will let work settle down first and then I can.

Q. So where are you living at the moment?
A. I have a flat in London which is where I live most of the time because the studio is down there and everything work related but I do often come back up north to my real home to see my family.

Q. Does it feel normal yet when you see yourself in magazines, or your album on the shelf in a store or when screaming girls are calling your name?
A. Absolutely not! I still take a second glance when I see a photo of myself, it is so strange! I try not to read the gossip magazines or the tabloid newspapers though because you can guarantee they have always got something negative to say about you or portray you in a bad image. I think when artists or other celebrities start reading about themselves that’s when things start to go wrong.

Q. When is your next album, Solo, due to be released?
A. A date actually hasn’t been set yet, probably around June time, I still have a few finishing touches to add to make it perfect!

Q. How do you know when it’s ready to be published?
A. When I listen to it and I feel really proud of all the hard work that has gone into it from everyone, and when I know that we have squeezed everything possible out of each other to make it the best it can be.

Q. What are your plans for this year then?
A. Well after the new single and album is released then I will probably do a few gigs and to give something back to my fans for being patient and waiting for Solo. Then I think I will have a rest and give everyone else I work with a rest, they are exhausted!

Q. Any news on a tour?
A. Tour dates are looking to be around January time, which I am really looking forward to!

Q. Have you ever seen fans more than once?
A. Absolutely! You can guarantee that you will recognize a face in the audience even if you are at the opposite end of the country from when you first saw them, that’s when you know you have dedicated fans which is really special.

Q. Do you think you will ever go across the pond to America?
A. Not at the moment, I think to do that you have to have a lot of experience, and plus I don’t think I am confident enough to do that yet, America can either love you or hate you and if they hate you then that’s your career down the drain. I’m getting all the satisfaction I need from the UK right now, no place like home.

Drawn Mock Ups of Pages

Front Cover

This is what how I want my front cover to be set out like. With the   name of the magazine if the top left hand corner (like most magazines) and the featured artist in the middle of the page. Also there will be other cover stories around the outside to give the reader information of what is inside.

I have included the date, issue number and price in the top right hand corner. This is a typical convention of a music magazine.

Also i have included a barcode in the bottom right hand corner. Obviously this is needed so that the reader can buy the magazine.

Contents Page

This is my idea for my contents page, I want to use an image that I have take of Alex's guitar as the background and then have the cover stories, editors not and small image of alex on the left hand side.

Two Page Spread

This is how i will set out my two page spread. The feature article will go in the columns that I have drawn and two small images will be included on either side of the page.
I decided to put the artist's name at the top of the page to stand out to the audience. This also links to the 'Contents' title and the magazine title on the cover. Also next to 'Alex Johnson' I thought it would be a good idea to include thumbnail images across the top of Alex.

Feedback 26.3.10

Kate,

The audience research powerpoint is very good - nice way to present the findings. You should have completed your pages to a rough standard by now - I need to see them in order to advise you further.
You can come in over the Easter  holiday if you need to but I need to know in advance when you're planning to come in so that we can notify reception and make sure that Nikki or Micahel will be around to offer advice.
You need to work on the audience feedback and then your evaluation over the break. I need you to have everything complete and on this blog by 30th April at the very latest so I have time to mark it and moderate it to send to the board. Whatever is on the blog on this date will be marked. If you want help to improve the evaluation, you will need to give me a copy by monday 19th April when we return from the Easter break.

Audience Feedback from Questionnaire

19.3.10

Kate,

You need to apply a lot of this research to your ideas for the project. Eg. Apply Young and Rubican - which of their groups will you appeal to and why? Do the same for each of the theories you've used. Also say why the institutions you've discussed would publish your product etc. Your audience research results should be on here by now and you should be well underway with your pages. You cannot expect to complete all this at Easter Kate! I need the whole project, including evaluation and everything o the blog by the end of April so i can mark it before i standardise it on the 3rd May!

Planning!!!

Photographs
I will be using a digital stills camera to take the photographs of my artist for my magazine pages. This will include medium and close up shots for front cover options and full length shots for both the contents page and two page spread.

Editing
I will be using a programme on the computer called Photoshop to edit my photos to make them look better. This will include changing the brightness of the images so they are not dull photographs also the contrast and hue. On photoshop I can also add effects for example black and white or sepia.

Creation
I will use a programme called InDesign to create my magazine pages. This allows me to bring the image ,that I will have edited in Photoshop, into InDesign and add text, shapes and other effects. Also this programme is helpful when I am creating my two page spread because I am able to get a template which sets my page up to look like a feature article page with columns etc.

Institutions

I have researched some media institutions that would produce and distribute my product.

EMAP
Emap is a business-to-business multiplatform media group, whose brands inform, inspire and connect within the sectors they operate in. For millions of people across the globe involved in the built environment, retail, media, fashion, health, education, government and automotive sectors, Emap provides essential news, analysis and access.

IPC
IPC Media produces over 85 iconic media brands, with our print brands alone reaching almost two thirds of UK women and 44% of UK men –almost 27 million UK adults – while our online brands collectively reach 20 million users every month.

IPC's diverse print and digital portfolio offers something for everyone, with a focus on three core audiences: men, mass market women and upmarket women.

Target Audience

My original target audience that I chose was 16-25. However after research into different music groups I found that usually after the age of 21 people tend to loose interest in discovering new music. Therefore I have decided to make my target audience ages 16-21.

Audiences
Media texts are usually produced to make money/generate revenue for the institution that has produced them. All products need an audience for the institution to target and so they can construct the product to appeal to them. An example of this would be the cast of Hollyoaks, a soap showed on Channel 4 which is a mainly teenage dominated viewing channel and this is there target audience, therefore most of the cast are young and will appeal to them and also teenagers can relate to the story lines.

How do we define target audience?

This chart shows the socio-economic status that exists in Britain today;

B                       Middle Class - Middle Management
C1                     Lower Middle Class - Trades and Supervisory Jobs

Advertising and Marketing Audience Profiling

Audience profiling can be split up into two broad categories;
1. Demographic Profiling
2. Psychographic Profiling

DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILING
- a need to identify and target different segments of the audience came about as the media industries grew following WW2. This was so that industries could market their product to the 'types' of people who would buy it.
- demographic profiling developed and involved grouping the audience into smaller groups based on variables such as age gender, geographical area, class, economics, religion and sexuality.
- This method groups people according to the lives they lead or their social or economic status.

Age is a particularly important grouping because;
- members of the same age group tend to be at the same stage of their family life cycle and therefore have similar wants.
- consumers of a similar age also have similar financial circumstances

PROBLEMS OF DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILING
- people are not all the same just because they have the same job, income or class
- people don't always share the same interests
- as a result of these flaws research has moved away from demographic profiling to psychographic profiling which categorises consumers in terms of needs rather that characteristics.

PSYCHOGRAPHIC PROFILING
- assumes the audience to be complex and to have certain needs which must be gratified.
- adverts aim to appeal to the audience's emotions and psychological needs

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

This chart shows the needs of the audience when consuming a media text.

Young and Rubicam's Cross-cultural Consumer Characteristics
This approach characterises people in terms of their personal aspirations. Young and Rubicam said there were four categories of audience based upon these aspirations;

1. Mainstreams - 40% of the market, this is the largest section. This group seeks security in conformity and this tend to buy well-known brand names.
2. Aspirers - these people are motivated by status. They buy smart, high tech and high fashion goods.
3. Succeeders - These people have already climbed the ladder and want to keep control of what they have.
4. Reformers - this group want the world to be a better place. Educated people such as teachers and doctors who apparently are more likely to buy eco-friendly and health products.

More recently, in 1998, a new group has emerged, the 'individual'. This group responds to advertising and marketing that emphasises quirkiness or individualism.

Project Phoenix - The consumption of music in the digital age
In 2003 Emap set out to research and map the fan economy. They did a first research study under the name of Project Phoenix, looking specifically at the attitudes towards music of people between the ages of 15 and 39.
Looking at different groups within it and attitudes and behaviours in relation to the way the audience consumes music.

They identified four main degrees of interest in music;

- SAVANTS; for how everything in life revolves around music. They represented 9% of the 15-39 age group 2003.

- ENTHUSIASTS - music is a key part of life but is balanced by other interests. Representing 16% of the 15-39 age group in 2003.

- CASUALS; music plays a welcome role,  but other things are far more important. Representing 26% of the 15-39 age group in 2003.

- INDIFFERENTS; would not lose much sleep if music ceased to exist. Representing 48%of the 15-39 age group in 2003.

This chart shows that currently at the top of the charts there are no acoustic artists which leaves a gap in the market for my artist to fill. This is also good because it will bring something new to the charts.
